If you've ever wondered why witches use red candles for love spells, green for money, or a heart-shaped leaf for anything involving affection, you're already brushing up against one of the oldest principles in magick. It's called the Law of Similars, and once you understand it, you'll start recognizing it everywhere in your practice.

It's also the concept that quietly holds up the entire system of correspondences. If you're going to understand why magick works the way it does, this is the place to start.

What the Law of Similars Actually Says

The Law of Similars (sometimes called the Law of Sympathy or the Doctrine of Signatures) is a principle that shows up across almost every magickal tradition in the world. It states that objects which resemble each other, whether in color, shape, texture, or quality, share an energetic connection.

In plain language: like affects like.

If something looks like the thing you want to influence, it can influence it. If a plant, stone, or object shares a physical or symbolic resemblance with your intention, it carries energy aligned with that intention. That resemblance creates what's called a sympathetic link, and sympathetic links are one of the primary ways magick actually works.

Some Classic Examples

The clearest way to understand this is by example, because once you see it, you can't unsee it.

Red stones for blood. Garnet, carnelian, and bloodstone have all historically been used for blood-related healing and vitality work. The color is red. Blood is red. The sympathetic link is obvious.

Heart-shaped leaves for love. Plants with heart-shaped foliage (like anthurium, redbud, or hoya) have been used in love and affection workings across cultures. The shape is the signature.

Walnuts for the brain. A walnut, once cracked open, looks almost exactly like a human brain, with two hemispheres and folded ridges. Walnuts have been used for mental clarity, memory, and focus for centuries. The physical resemblance is the whole reason.

Eyebright for vision. The flower of eyebright has small markings that look like little eyes. It's been used for eyesight and clarity of perception since at least the Middle Ages.

Roots for grounding. Roots literally anchor plants into the earth. When you want to ground yourself, root vegetables and dried roots are classic tools. The function of the object in nature mirrors the function you want in your spell.

Once you know to look for it, you'll see this principle in almost every correspondence you've ever encountered.

Why This Actually Works

This is where a lot of beginners get skeptical, and honestly, that's fair. Why would something simply resembling another thing carry any real influence?

Here's the answer that lands for most people. Symbolic images affect the subconscious in specific, measurable ways, and this shows up all over marketing science.

Advertisers understand this deeply. Fast food logos are almost universally red and yellow because those colors subconsciously stimulate hunger and urgency. Luxury brands use black, gold, and clean typography because those subconsciously signal exclusivity. Those symbols get chosen deliberately because they influence the human mind in predictable ways.

Magick uses the same principle, on purpose. When you surround yourself with symbols of what you want, you're sending a signal to your subconscious, to the physical world, and to the energetic field around you that this intention is real, that this thing is coming, that this shape belongs in your life. Symbol shapes reality. Always has.

The Law of Similars in Action

The Law of Similars shows up in almost every category of magickal working. Once you understand the principle, you can start applying it deliberately rather than just following instructions.

Sympathetic magick. This is the entire category of magick built directly on the Law of Similars. Any working where you use an object that resembles your target or intention is sympathetic magick. It's the umbrella that covers most of what follows.

Poppets and dolls. Probably the most famous application. A poppet is a doll made to represent a person. Whatever you do to the poppet symbolically affects the person it represents. Poppets can be used for healing (bandaging the doll's injured area while sending healing energy), protection (wrapping the doll in protective materials), or binding (restricting the doll's movement to restrict harmful behavior).

Poppets have a reputation because of pop culture, but they're one of the oldest and most versatile tools in folk magick globally.

Colors. The entire color correspondence system is Law of Similars. Green for money because money is often green and plants are green (growth). Pink and red for love because those are the colors of the human heart and blush. Black for protection and banishing because black absorbs and blocks. White for anything because white contains all colors and works as a universal substitute.

Shapes. Circles are used for protection because a circle has no gaps for anything to enter. Triangles are used for manifestation because they draw energy to a single point. Spirals are used for cycles and return.

Natural objects. Feathers connect to the element of air and to communication with birds and spirits. Shells connect to water and the ocean. Bones and roots connect to earth and ancestry. Each one carries meaning built into its physical form.

How to Apply This to Your Own Practice

Here's the useful takeaway: you don't have to look everything up.

When you're building a working and you're not sure what to use, ask yourself a few simple questions about any object you're considering:

• What does this look like?
• What does its color suggest?
• What does its shape resemble?
• What qualities does it naturally possess in the world?

The answers point you directly toward what the object corresponds to. A pinecone protects itself with layers and closes when threatened. That's protection magick. A rose has soft petals and vicious thorns. That's love with boundaries. A river stone is smooth from years of moving water. That's emotional patience and flow.

Following this logic isn't guessing. It's using the same reasoning system that built almost every correspondence you'll find in any grimoire.

The Law of Similars and Correspondences

Here's the bigger picture. The entire system of magickal correspondences (every crystal meaning, every plant association, every color association, every symbol) is built on this one principle. Once you understand the Law of Similars, correspondence charts stop feeling arbitrary and start feeling like a coherent language.

Green corresponds to prosperity because plants and money are green. Amethyst corresponds to peace and psychic work because its color echoes the third eye and the twilight sky. Rose quartz corresponds to love because it's the color of the human heart at its softest. Every entry in a well-built grimoire has a reason. You just have to know to look for it.
