What Is a
Correspondence?

The concept that holds all of witchcraft together.

If you've spent any time reading about witchcraft, you've run into the word "correspondence" and probably moved past it hoping context would make it clear. Let me just say it plainly: a correspondence is a symbolic relationship between things that share the same energy.

That's it. That's the whole concept.

When Protection corresponds to Black Tourmaline, it means Black Tourmaline carries protective energy. When Love corresponds to Friday and the color pink, it means those things share the same underlying vibration. They're all different expressions of the same force, just in different forms.

Why This Matters for Your Practice

Correspondences are the foundation of how spellwork is built. When you want to do a working for, say, healing, you don't just light a random candle and hope for the best. You choose a blue or purple candle because those colors correspond to healing. You might add amethyst because it carries healing energy. You might time it for a Sunday because Sunday is ruled by the Sun, which also corresponds to healing.

Every element you add is another layer of the same intention. You're stacking aligned energies on top of each other, and that's what makes a working more effective than just wishing really hard.

How Correspondences Connect

Think of it like a web. Pull on one thread and you find everything connected to it. Protection links to:

  • Crystals: Black Tourmaline, Obsidian, Smoky Quartz
  • Plants: Rosemary, Basil, Mugwort
  • Deities: Archangel Michael, Hekate, Athena
  • Timing: Saturday and the waning moon

Every one of those things carries protection energy. You don't need all of them. One crystal, one plant, and the right timing is more than enough to build something solid.

You Don't Need Everything on the List

This is one of the most important things to internalize early. Correspondence lists can look overwhelming. If you see that Protection connects to 15 crystals, 20 plants, and 10 deities, you are not expected to use all of them. Use what you have. Use what resonates. The energy is the same regardless of which expression of it you choose.

Where to Start

When you're planning any working, start with your intention. What do you actually want? Name it specifically. Then look up that intention and see what tools align with it. Let availability guide your choices from there.

The Magick Manuscript is built entirely around this system: 15 cross-linked grimoires where every crystal, plant, deity, symbol, and timing element connects back to the intentions they carry. If you want a full correspondence reference sourced from published books, it's all here.
