How to time your spells by the moon and planets.

When I first started practicing, I ignored timing completely. Then I went through a phase where I was convinced every working had to be perfectly aligned or it wouldn't count. These days I'm somewhere in the middle, and that middle is where I think most witches belong.

You don't need to read a birth chart to use astrology in your craft. Magickal astrology is about knowing what energy you're calling in and when that energy is strongest.

What Astrology Is

Astrology is one of the oldest surviving occult sciences. Sophisticated systems developed in Babylonian, Egyptian, and Aztec cultures, and for centuries in the West it was a respected form of divination, consulted by royal courts. The rise of empirical science in the seventeenth century pushed it toward the label of superstition, but it never lost its following.

The Western system we use today traces back to Babylonian astrology, which shaped both Egyptian and Greek traditions. It's built on a simple idea: the sun, moon, and planets are living forces that shape the world and everyone in it. The word planet itself comes from the Greek planaomai, meaning "wanderer," because unlike the fixed stars, the planets move across the sky.

By tradition there are seven planets: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Yes, the sun and moon count. Both astrology and magick work as geocentric systems, looking at the sky from where we stand on earth. That number seven lines up neatly with the seven days of the week and the seven magickal metals, and that's not a coincidence. Each day is named for, and ruled by, one of those planets.

You Don't Need to Read Your Chart

Most people meet astrology through their sun sign: the zodiac sign the sun was passing through when they were born. That's a big part of astrology, but it's chart astrology — the art of reading a person's birth chart. Magickal astrology works a little differently.

When you work with a planet in a spell, you're invoking its correspondences, not your personal placements. Anyone can call on Mars for courage or Venus for love, no matter what's in their chart. You don't need to be a Leo to work with solar energy.

Your own chart can still be useful. Knowing your moon sign, for instance, can show you what kind of magick feels most comforting and nurturing to you. But it's not required, and you can do powerful, well-timed work without ever pulling up a chart.

The Seven Planets and What They Rule

Each of the classical planets carries its own energetic signature, along with a day of the week, a metal, colors, stones, and herbs that share its energy.

The Sun: Personal power, health, success, confidence, vitality, courage, and recognition. The Sun rules Sunday, and its metal is gold. Reach for it when you want to shine or when you're working on healing, since its energy restores and strengthens.

The Moon: Dreamwork, intuition, psychic ability, the subconscious, imagination, and fertility. The Moon rules Monday, and its metal is silver. It also governs cycles, which is why moon phases matter so much in timing.

Mercury: Communication, knowledge, learning, business, and divination. Mercury rules Wednesday, and its metal is quicksilver. Tradition holds that a witch should attune to Mercury's power before any divination.

Venus: Love, friendship, romance, enchantment, beauty, art, and every kind of attraction and influence. Venus rules Friday, and its metal is copper. She covers every kind of love too: romantic, platonic, familial, and self-love. Venus sits at the center of the love current in Western magick, so when a spell calls for rose petals, a pink candle, or a Friday working, it's reaching toward her domain whether she's named or not. Love spells have traditionally been timed to a Friday during a waxing moon.

Mars: Courage, motivation, victory, strength, protection, and conflict. Mars rules Tuesday, and its metal is iron. Mars isn't only about fighting. It also carries the warrior's calm, the steady composure you need to gather yourself in a crisis and wait for the right moment to act.

Jupiter: Prosperity, luck, expansion, career, honor, and spiritual growth. Jupiter rules Thursday, and its metal is tin. It's the go-to planet for financial work, and at its heart it's about sovereignty: being the ruler of your own life.

Saturn: Protection, grounding, stability, boundaries, binding, endings, and discipline. Saturn rules Saturday, and its metal is lead. A lot of people are nervous about Saturn, and it is heavy to work with, but it's one of the most useful planets for protection and for bringing things to a close.

The modern outer planets, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, have their own entries too. But traditional planetary magick centers on these seven, so they're where to start.

Working with the Moon

Of all the planets, the moon is the one most closely tied to magick. She's traditionally considered the ruler of all the magickal arts, and spells have been timed to her phases for as long as anyone has been casting them. One full lunar cycle, from new moon to new moon, takes about 29.5 days.

The lunar cycle is usually broken into eight phases, but for timing your spells, it helps to start with the basics.

New moon: Beginnings. As the moon grows in light, whatever you start now grows with it. This is the time for new jobs, new romances, new homes, and fresh starts of any kind.

Waxing moon: Growth and increase. Cast while the light is building to grow something in your life, like your income, a relationship, or your chances at a promotion. Spells to increase or begin something are traditionally started on or just after the new moon.

Full moon: Culmination. This is when you start to see the results of what you began at the new moon. It's a powerful time for bringing projects to completion, drawing recognition, and uncovering secrets. Leaving your tools and charms out in the full moon's light gives them a boost, though it doesn't replace charging them with your own energy.

Waning moon: Decrease and release. Cast while the light is shrinking to reduce something, like debt, a bad habit, or an unhealthy relationship. Banishing work belongs here too, and these spells are traditionally started on or just after the full moon.

Dark moon: The few days when the moon isn't visible at all, right before the new moon returns, are a point of real disagreement. Some traditions avoid casting during this window entirely. Others, especially those devoted to dark moon spirits like Hecate or Lilith, consider it a time of profound power.

Moon Signs

As the moon travels around the earth, she passes through all twelve zodiac signs, spending roughly two and a half days in each. These are called moon signs, and they add another layer to your timing. The phase tells you which direction the energy is moving. The sign tells you what flavor it has.

A quick way to read them is by element.

  • Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): The moon's energy feels warm and spontaneous. Good for courage, vitality, and self-expression.
  • Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): The energy slows and steadies. Good for grounding, building structure, and results that last.
  • Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): The energy lights up the mind. Good for communication, learning, and ideas.
  • Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): The moon is in her home element here. Good for emotional healing, intuition, and psychic work.

You can get even more specific. A moon in Taurus is ideal for abundance magick and kitchen witchery. A moon in Scorpio is perfect for shadow work and psychic development. A moon in Cancer, the moon's home sign, supports home blessings and ancestral work.

Here's a handy trick: the new moon always falls in the same sign the sun is in, and the full moon always lands in the opposite sign. So when the sun is in Libra, you'll have a Libra new moon and an Aries full moon.

One more thing to watch for: the void-of-course moon, the stretch when the moon has finished its business in one sign but hasn't entered the next. Things started during this window tend not to finish, or end in unexpected ways, so it's worth checking an almanac before you start something important.

Layering Your Timing

This is where it all comes together. Every day, hour, and intention carries a planetary correspondence, and the more of them you line up, the more support your working has.

Cast a love spell on a Friday (Venus) during a waxing moon, and you've layered two supportive energies. Do banishing work on a Saturday (Saturn) during a waning moon, and the timing reinforces your intention from two directions. Add a moon sign that fits, and you've stacked three.

If you want to go further, there are planetary hours. Each day is divided into hours ruled by the different planets, calculated from your local sunrise and sunset, so they shift with the seasons and your location. Most witches use an app or calculator for these rather than working them out by hand.

A simple way to plan a working:

  • Look up your intention's timing correspondences.
  • Check the current day, moon phase, and season.
  • Line up as many factors as you can, or work with what you have.
  • Note which crystals, herbs, and deities share that timing.

And if you can't wait for perfect timing? Work when you need to. Friday plus a waxing moon is stronger for love work than Friday alone, but Friday alone still works. Urgency and need matter more than perfect alignment.

I do a lot of my own work on the full moon and the new moon, and on the days of the week that match my intention. I track the moon right inside my grimoire, where a widget shows me the current phase and sign at a glance.

Special Moons

Every so often, the sun, moon, and earth line up in ways that add extra intensity to the usual cycle.

Eclipses: A solar eclipse happens only at a new moon, and it's often treated as an amplified new moon: a portal for closing one chapter and pushing a new direction into motion. A lunar eclipse happens only at a full moon, and it's often treated as an intensified full moon, when emotions run high and hidden things surface. Practitioners are split on eclipse magick. Some avoid outcome-driven spellwork because the energy feels unpredictable. Others use it on purpose. If the energy feels chaotic, a safe approach is to focus on grounding, cleansing, healing, and reflection rather than pushing for a specific result.

Supermoons: When a full moon lands at or near the moon's closest point to earth, it's called a supermoon. It can appear noticeably larger and brighter, and many witches find its energy amplified and electric, which makes it a strong time for manifestation and full moon ritual.

Blue and black moons: Because the lunar cycle is a little shorter than most calendar months, an extra full or new moon sometimes slips into a single month. A second full moon is a blue moon, often linked to luck, success, and prophecy. A second new moon is a black moon, linked to deep truth, shadow work, and long-range manifestation.

Myths Worth Letting Go Of

"Mercury retrograde ruins your spells." Retrograde effects are chart-specific astrology. They depend on a person's birth chart and current transits. For magickal timing and choosing materials, Mercury's core correspondences still apply whether it's retrograde or not.

"You have to be the right sign to work with a planet." You're invoking correspondences, not personal placements. Anyone can work with Mars or Venus energy.

"If the timing isn't perfect, the spell won't work." Timing enhances a working. It doesn't decide whether it succeeds. Work with what you have.

"There's only one zodiac." Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac. They're two different systems, so if you practice Vedic astrology, translate your timing accordingly.

Start With the Moon

Start small. Learn the seven planets and their days, and start paying attention to the moon. Note the phase each time you cast, write down how the working felt, and look back at what happened. Within a few cycles you'll start to see your own patterns.

Timing strengthens a spell, but it doesn't make or break it.
